We've had Biruk in our care for 4 weeks now, been home for 3 weeks. Before I forget, I wanted to document all the things he has learned and done and what we have learned about him.
He has a smile that lights up a room.
His laugh is infectious.
He is loud! There is no such thing as an "inside voice" for this boy.
The first 2 phrases he knew was "come on!" and "oh my goodness!" -now 4 weeks later his vocabulary is definitely expanding.
He is impatient and hears "koi/wait" ALOT. I think the boys were ignored a lot in Ethiopia (probably cultural?) and so if you do not respond immediately, they will keep repeating whatever you are saying until you DO respond. He also will ask for the same thing over and over even if you tell him no....thinking if he pushes long enough we'll give in. Because of the language barrier it's hard to tell him he should only ask once so we're trying to be really firm with our "no's" so he gets it.
"the" is "za"...."za car" "za swim" ...and if he's really excited about what we're going to do he adds a hearty "YEAH"....he loves to swim so for that it would be "mom, za swim YEAH!"
he came to us knowing how to write all his A,B, C's and all his numbers. He writes very small and I'll have to re-teach him how to write everything properly -but we were really impressed to already have the basics of English writing down.
He knows most animals by their English names now and is learning their sounds.
He loves all things sweet. He would be perfectly happy if I'd serve him ice cream with chocolate sauce for every meal. :) After dinner, EVERY night he has 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream with 2 strawberries sliced up, a drizzle of chocolate syrup and some sprinkles.
He eats 2-3 apples a day, loves apples juice and orange juice, pineapples and strawberries, and tolerates bananas.
He LOVES french fries (he calls them chips) and cannot understand why we won't just let him eat those when we go to McD's. :) He chooses the chicken nuggets and is starting to like those.
He is super helpful -he helps me make my coffee nearly every morning, when he sees me cooking he will automatically start setting the table, putting the silverware has become his job when the dishwasher is done, and he even helped me fold his own laundry this morning.
He wants to shower every night. Apparently they only got showers once a week or even less, so he is pretty excited he has access to a warm shower whenever he wants it. He also loves brushing his teeth.

So awesome to read about your sweet boy and all of the things he is doing and learning! Sara Beth does the same thing with asking over and over and repeating things we tell her. It can get really old really fast but I have found that she is really learning our language by doing this so we allow it....to a point! So happy to hear he's doing so well and is such a helpful little boy around the house!
