yesterday Elizabeth had a routine appointment with the ear specialist.
I mentioned to the doc that we were a little concerned (and I do mean a little-we haven't been too worried or panicking over this!) that her speech seemed a bit delayed. She is definitely talking ALOT more than she used to -and what' s more, we can actually understand her most of the time. Our concern is that when she tries to repeat words we say, they'll come out sounding sorta like the word we said -but not quite. Almost like she's repeating it back to us just like she heard it, not like it's supposed to sound. Does that make sense? hope so!
Anyway, the doc asked if we wanted to check out a loaner soft-band BAHA to see if it would help. The BAHA is a bone anchored hearing aid. When she is closer to age 6 or 7, a BAHA will most likely be permanently implanted into her skull, behind her ear and into her hair line. It sounds worse than it is. :) What will be implanted is just a teeny titanium post -and then the BAHA will be able to snap on and off. For children to young to the surgery, they put the BAHA on a headband. Unfortunately, the only headband the doctor had is "space aliens". :) The audiologist assured me that, if we decide to order one, they'll get a much more girly headband for Elizabeth.
We haven't noticed much of a difference in her hearing or speech yet, but that may take some time. Because her hearing on the right side is just fine, she luckily really hasn't suffered true hearing loss. which is a very good thing. :) We're just hoping to fine-tune her hearing with this BAHA.
