2012 -The Year of the Doctor

We knew going into this year, we'd be seeing a lot of medical personnel with Elizabeth's 2 jaw surgeries and John's shoulder surgery.

What we didn't foresee was ME needing medical care as well!

I've had back pain for many years...probably 10 or more.
About 3 years ago I began seeing a chiropractor who was able to help me quite a bit (as well as diagnose me with degenerative disc disease in 2 lumbar discs).

Earlier this year my chiropractor moved too far away for me to continue seeing him.
I was feeling pretty good so didn't look for a new chiropractor.

Then, in between taking care of everyone else, I let my back go.

The pain got so bad John talked me into seeking help again.  We found an awesome new chiropractor who implements much more into his treatment plans than just "adjustments".

It took over a month of seeing this new doctor and NOT getting any better for the new doc to convince me to get an MRI.
(not my MRI above!)

I was diagnosed with a herniated disc at L5-S1 -the lowest disc in your back.
Basically, the "guts" of the disc have torn through all the layers and was protruding out of the disc space, pressing on my spinal nerves.

It's been about 6 weeks since the diagnosis and I'm feeling better than I was!
Along with seeing the chiropractor for a special treatment (basically it sucks the guts of the disc back into the center so the outside of the disc can "scab" over and heal). and physical therapy, I'm having to adjust MUCH of my daily life.  Simple, everyday tasks are now more difficult as I adjust the way I do them so as not to further injure my back.

Although this is terribly inconvenient, we are encouraged that I'm getting better.
The hope is that in 8-12 months, my back will be fully healed and I'll be "good as new"!

Jeanette, I am SO sorry. Bill has had a herniated disc, so I know just what you are feeling. OUCH. For him surgery was what helped. He's had 2 surgeries. The 2nd being shortly after we brought Kate home. He suffered terribly while on her adoption trip. Anyway, being mama to 4, I know it's SO difficult with your back as it is. Praying that you continue to progress with your treatments.
