MAUI-Feb. 1st -Hana

When we told people we were headed to Maui, everyone said "you HAVE TO take the road to Hana".

We really debated...we were only in Maui for 4 days, did we want to spend 1 entire day driving?

We decided we did ~and we were SO glad!

**note -if you go, spend the $20 for the "Road to Hana" CD -it made the drive! lots of little tidbits of info from history, to anectdotes, to tips on where to stop and get out and hike**

We had heard you want to get on the road as early as possible -so we left the condo before the sun rose.

sunrise over Maui

if you look closely, you can see the road "cut" into the sides of the hill/cliffs

much of the road looked like this -LUSH green growth EVERYWHERE

rainbow eucalyptus trees on a nature trail (side road off the main road)

can you tell what type of tree this is (above)?

bananas!

bamboo was everywhere!

it was originally brought over by Chinese workers a few hundred years ago.

taro (root vegetable kinda like potato) fields

tons of waterfalls along the road

the black sand beach

words really don't describe how incredibly beautiful this beach was

and we were the first to reach it this day so the beach was pristine

John wanted to check out the water

I think the wave was a bit bigger than he anticipated! :)

the waterfalls and pools of O'heo were quite crowded!

John had vowed to jump off at least one waterfall while we were in Maui -so this was his chance!

horses grazing on our way back to Hana

a good shot of the bamboo "forests"

as we drove back to our condo, you pass by the "north shore" of Maui where there is great surfing in the AM and the afternoons are for the windsurfers and kite surfers.

We stopped and watched these amazing athletes for quite awhile!

the windsurfers get one side of the beach and the kite surfers get the other

the kite surfers were unbelievable to watch

the tricks/stunts they were able to perform were crazy!

this guy was crazy fun to watch -in this photo he's about 15-20 feet in the air after launching off a wave!

sea turtles were hanging out just below us!

a perfect end to a perfect day

and a perfect vacation in Maui.
